Mountain School Announcement
We are pleased to announce that your 5th grader has the
opportunity to attend Mountain School this year!
Who?: All 2009-2010 5th Grade Students
What?: Mountain School is a 3-day, 2-night nationally
recognized environmental education program offered by the North Cascades Institute. Each year, Geneva fifth graders travel to Mountain School as one of their last experiences in elementary school.
Where?: Nestled on the shores of Lake Diablo in the North Cascades, the school is surrounded by 7 million acres of protected public lands. The facility includes classrooms, labs, library, dining hall,
dormitories and three trailside learning shelters.
When?: Mrs. Evans’s class is going October 12-14 and Mrs. Guthrie & Mr. Danielson’s classes are going April 12-14.
Why?: The children spend their days learning about biodiversity, mountain ecosystems, aquatic
ecology, glaciers, geology, forest ecology and cultural history during hands-on educational activities along the trails and in two labs. For many fifth graders, Mountain School is THE favorite memory they take with them from elementary school. Our children are very fortunate to have this opportunity.
How?: Fundraising!! Participation in a program of this quality is not inexpensive. Tuition per student is $300. However, North Cascades Institute has secured funding to offset part of that cost. That leaves $125 per student. We want to keep the expense per family to a minimum (goal is $75 per student), so we will conduct various fundraising activities throughout the year.

We’d love to hear your ideas and all parents should join the Mountain School e-mail list by sending an e-mail to me at hrstevenson@comcast.net. That is the quickest and easiest way to get information out to everyone!
Stay tuned for news about other upcoming events. It’s important that the fundraisers are supported in order to minimize out-of-pocket tuition costs. Scholarships will be available to fundraising participants and will help to ensure that every child who wants to go has the opportunity.
