Loggers and local men in front of one of the huge cedar trees. (Large Image=41.7K)
Horses supplied much of the power to drag logs through the woods. Here too, can be seen the man who was acting as grease monkey. It was his task to "grease up" certain spots to make the logs glide along a little easier. (Large Image=36K)
Oxen being used in logging, in 1890. This view shows the skid road over which the logs were dragged. (Large Image=34.2K)
View of the Whatcom Creek Waterway. At the right of the photograph are the ruins of the Peabody-Roeder Mill. The mill was built in 1853. At the side is one of the flumes with water coming from the mill pond. The mill pond would have been backed up beyond the present site of the Prospect Street Bridge. At the center of the photo is the foot bridge that was used to go from Whatcom to the Sehome side or vice versa. These forested regions were difficult to travel through, but the beaches were usually clear, making traveling easier. The boat in the foreground could belong to Captain Roeder, since he was known to have a boat of this kind. The mill was burned in 1873. (Large Image=43.6K)
The Bellingham Bay Mill. This mill was powered by steam. The long curved flume carried debris away from the mill. This mill burned in 1898. It was rebuilt and Bloedel-Donovan acquired it in 1906 or 1907. (Large Image=23.2K)
The Shipping Dock at the Eldridge and Bartlett Mill (1904 or 1905). This mill was built in 1883. The dock was used for the shipping of lumber. Many sailing ships came to this area to take lumber to other places. (Large Image=29K)
